There are so many dog competitions (not to mention knock-offs, a la the Puppy Bowl) it’s often hard to keep up with which pups are being praised for what. But last week, the annual awards ceremony for the World’s Ugliest Dog was held in San Francisco, as reported by BuzzFeed Animals. This year’s winner is the pictured 9-year-old English Bulldog, Zsa Zsa. Precious, right?
Although the trophy may seem poorly thought-through, it’s actual quite an honor for sweet Zsa Zsa to be recognized. According to her owners, she’s been through a rough journey so far in her life.
“She was a puppy mill dog for 5 years in Missouri, and instead of placing her in a loving home at her end of breeding, she was put in a dog auction,” according to her competition profile. “Zsa Zsa was then purchased by Underdog Rescue. Her mother saw her beautiful picture on pet finder and HAD TO HAVE HER! She now lives out her retired life in Anoka, MN.”
Plus, it’s not like Zsa Zsa just got verbal recognition: Her and her owner, Megan Brainard, won $1,500 from the Sonoma, California-area fair. And while sure, it may technically be for the World’s Ugliest Dog, we think Zsa Zsa may be the world’s cutest, too.
