Here at PetInsider, we love all dogs. Big ones, small ones, fluffy ones, smooth ones. We believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that every dog is cute in its own special way. To celebrate the fact that even “ugly” dogs deserve some love and recognition, there’s a yearly competition where owners actually campaign for their pup to be crowned “World’s Ugliest Dog.”
The competition takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California. People come from all over to showcase their unconventional beauties. But they’re competing for more than just bragging rights. The winner gets $1,500, a trophy, and a trip to NY for media appearances.
This year, hundreds gathered to fight for the title. There were plenty of Chinese crested dogs in honor of last year’s winner, a Chinese crested named Sweepee Rambo. Here’s a look at some of the 2017 contestants:

A Chinese crested named Rascal awaits his moment in the spotlight.

Brutus from Arizona shows off his impressive underbite.

The owner of Brussel Griffon pug Moe campaigns for him to win the top spot.
The competition was fierce and only one would prevail. At the end of the day, it was Martha the mastiff who was crowned the winner. The judges deemed her exceptionally droopy face to be the most unique of the bunch. She and her owner proudly took home the grand prize.
