Pets are Family, Not Property: Tika the Iggy

Did you know that under the law pets are seen as replaceable property? That’s right, the law essentially treats losing a pet the same way as losing a table. In honor of Chloe the Mini Frenchie, Loni Edwards’ beloved dog who passed away due to medical error, PetInsider will be featuring a story every Wednesday about pets being family, not property. Please join us by reading the stories and signing the pledge we created with the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) to push for change

Tika may be a skinny, eight-pound dog, but when she enters a room all eyes are on her. Her personality is extraordinary, and unlike any other dog I’ve met.  She’s sweet-natured and gentle, yet also exceptionally playful and athletic.

Tika can usually be found basking in sunspots or snuggled into soft furniture, often hidden under a blanket, pillow, or towel. We often need to watch where we sit! But if Tika sounds like the perfect couch potato . . . she isn’t! After a long nap she will suddenly explode into a burst of vigorous running and leaping, and literally bouncing off the walls, fence, sofa, or beds.

Because of her size, we’re able to take Tika with us wherever we go. We usually get lots of stares from people who have never seen an Italian greyhound before, but anyone who meets her falls immediately in love with our little alien.

Tika’s personality could be described as quirky, inquisitive, and demanding – traits that are unique from any other breed we’ve met. Sometimes we forget she’s even a dog, as our connections feel as if we’re interacting with a family member.

We love this little girl and have loved sharing her adventures with her thousands of followers online. We couldn’t imagine our life without her being apart of our family. Sadly, according to the law, pets like Tika are seen as property, and replaceable as such. To anyone who has owned a pet, we know that they are far, far more valuable than any item we could ever own and should be treated as such in the eyes of the law. If you agree that pets are not property, please join us in signing the pledge today.

Please join us in pushing for much needed change by signing and sharing the pledge (https://aldf.org/animalsnotproperty). Follow along every Wednesday for a new story, and sign up for our newsletter to receive it in your inbox.
