Cat lovers, listen up. If you’re looking for 80 minutes of pure feline fun, look no further than the new documentary Kedi. Inspired by the thousands of street cats that roam the Turkish city of Istanbul, Kedi follows the story of 7 wildly different and wildly interesting cats.
These cats, named Sari, Bengü, Aslan Parçasi, Psikopat, Deniz, Gamsiz, and Duman, each have their own personalities and specialties. One is a hunter, another a lover, and a third a foodie. This documentary uses real footage woven together to create an interesting, interconnected narrative.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Ceyda Torun talks about the extensive casting process they went through to end up with the final 7 cats. On some of their initial research visits, they identified 35 potential stars. They ended up filming 19 and whittled it down to 7 complete stories for the final piece.
What makes this film so amazing is its ability to combine cute cat footage with actual storylines and even deeper, meaningful themes. Through the lives of these street cats, Kedi explores the challenges of living together peacefully, the existence of God, and the relationship between man and animal.
So if you’re looking for something that’s not only cute, but also conversation-starting, Kedi might just be the doc for you. Head to their website to see where you can catch a screening.
